Visceral Manipulation in Sydney
Get in Touch
Visceral manipulation is one of the manual therapy approaches used at Osteopath Sydney. If you are considering it, Dr Phil Austin can discuss your symptoms, your medical history and whether any osteopathic approach is appropriate for you at the Potts Point clinic.
What is visceral manipulation?
Visceral manipulation is a manual therapy approach in which a practitioner uses their hands to work on areas of the body, including the abdomen. It is described as an approach within osteopathic care, rather than a guaranteed part of every appointment.
Before any hands-on care, you can ask where the practitioner proposes to work, what the technique involves and why it is being considered. Your consent and comfort matter throughout the appointment.
If your symptoms are mainly in the spine, our approach to back pain in Sydney looks at how the abdomen and trunk work together.
What does the evidence say?
Research on visceral manipulation is limited, and studies do not establish reliable benefits for all conditions for which it is sometimes promoted. It is not a proven treatment for diseases of the internal organs and does not replace medical care.
If you have abdominal or digestive symptoms, speak with your doctor about assessment and appropriate treatment. Seek urgent medical help for sudden severe abdominal pain or other serious symptoms; if the pain is severe or you are seriously unwell, call triple zero (000).
Visceral techniques are often part of a wider plan for people living with persistent pain that hasn’t responded to other treatment.
How an appointment is approached
Dr Austin will ask about your symptoms, medical history, investigations and any treatment you are receiving. He can discuss whether osteopathic assessment is suitable and whether a medical review is needed before considering hands-on care.
If a technique is appropriate, its purpose and practical details can be discussed with you. You can ask questions, decline a technique or ask for it to stop. An individual appointment may use other approaches or no hands-on treatment, depending on the assessment and your preferences.
You can book visceral manipulation with an osteopath in Rushcutters Bay, close to the city and the eastern suburbs.
